The Wondrous Mariah Vineyards – Mendocino Ridge AVA
Dan grows Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. Ninety five percent of the grapes are sold to a number of wineries, and the rest goes into the production of 500 cases of the Mariah Vineyard label. All except the recently planted Chardonnay vines are dry farmed. Sustainable farming is practiced throughout.
Mendocino Ridge: California’s best kept secret source of spectacular wines
The ridges are above and surrounded by coastal fog, fostering the name “Islands in the Sky.” This catchy name is trademarked by Dan Dooling, owner of Mariah Vineyards, a producer of Mendocino Ridge Zinfandel and Syrah, and one of the winegrowers along with Steve Alden of Perli Vineyard to successfully achieve appellation status for the region.
FOOD & WINE- Who’s Who: Dan Dooling
A third generation San Franciscan, Dan”s family was well-established in the trucking business. As a young man he naturally found himself working as a teamster on the waterfront. But, as Dan tells it with a wide and warm grin “I always, always wanted to have a vineyard.”
Mariah Vineyards: an island in the sky
To get a perspective of Mariah Vineyards” location, you have to drive over the hills toward the coast. When billowy cotton puffs of fog fill up the valleys, the coastal mountain peaks jut up like islands, just like — as the Mendocino Ridge appellation is nicknamed — “Islands in the Sky.”
Wine Spectator Unfiltered: Mariah Vineyards & Mariah Carey
Mariah (the vineyard) is a small Zinfandel plot in the Mendocino Ridge appellation in Northern California; Brown-Forman has marketed the wines for several years now, and a company spokesman denied that Mariah (the diva) has any stake in the site. Obviously, the company loves that she's a fan and is not adverse to her giving the wine a few shout-outs.
Doolings brought Zinfandel heritage to the ridge: Mendocino County’s Islands in Sky
Don't look westward across the billowing Pacific Ocean waves unfurling for miles along California's spectacular Mendocino Coast for these islands. These atolls are not surrounded by water, but by forests. They are “Islands in the Sky;” vineyards, like inverted ice cream cones poking into the heavens of California's most famous grape growing region, The North Coast.
